HISTORIC SOUTH DOWNTOWN

HSD is the first state-created agency responsible for community preservation in the nation. Motivated by their fight for preservation, promotion, and prosperity in Seattle's Chinatown International District & Pioneer Square, we loved getting to know the community members and organizations behind some of the movements in these historic Seattle neighborhoods.

In 2023, Seattle's Chinatown International District (CID) was listed as one of the 11 most endangered places in the US by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Over the years, CID has experienced significant rezoning, housing issues, gentrification, COVID, anti-asian hate, and discussions around siting a new light rail station. These are the stories of the CID.
